Background of the Study

Electoral disenfranchisement remains a pressing issue in democratic societies, particularly for minority groups who often face systemic barriers to political participation. In Nigeria, electoral laws and processes aim to ensure free and fair elections; however, several minority communities still encounter challenges that limit their voting rights, such as administrative inefficiencies, voter suppression, and deliberate exclusion from the electoral process (Ojo & Ibrahim, 2024).

Sokoto North Local Government Area (LGA) is home to a mix of ethnic and religious groups, some of which are marginalized in the broader political landscape. These minority groups often experience disenfranchisement through voter registration difficulties, inadequate polling units, electoral violence, and political intimidation (Ahmed & Usman, 2023). This study seeks to assess the effects of electoral disenfranchisement on minority groups in Sokoto North LGA, exploring how such challenges impact political representation, governance, and democratic participation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite constitutional provisions for free and fair elections, minority groups in Sokoto North LGA face significant obstacles in exercising their voting rights. Limited access to voter registration, election-day harassment, and systemic exclusion reduce their political influence and representation. This study examines the nature and extent of electoral disenfranchisement among minority groups and its implications for democracy.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the forms of electoral disenfranchisement affecting minority groups in Sokoto North LGA.

  2. To analyze the impact of disenfranchisement on political participation and representation.

  3. To explore strategies for addressing disenfranchisement and ensuring inclusivity in elections.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the key forms of electoral disenfranchisement in Sokoto North LGA?

  2. How does disenfranchisement affect minority groups' participation in elections?

  3. What measures can be implemented to mitigate electoral disenfranchisement?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Electoral disenfranchisement significantly reduces voter participation among minority groups in Sokoto North LGA.

  2. Disenfranchisement negatively impacts political representation of minority groups.

  3. Effective electoral reforms can enhance minority participation in elections.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study contributes to the discourse on electoral inclusivity by highlighting the challenges faced by minority groups. It provides insights for policymakers, electoral bodies, and advocacy groups on how to enhance political participation and reduce disenfranchisement in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Sokoto North LGA and focuses on minority groups' experiences in recent elections. A limitation is potential reluctance of respondents to discuss electoral exclusion due to fear of political repercussions.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Electoral Disenfranchisement: The systematic exclusion of eligible voters from participating in elections.

  • Minority Groups: Ethnic, religious, or demographic groups with limited political influence.

  • Political Representation: The extent to which groups have a voice in governance through elected officials.
